India:Regulator orders insurers to cover mental illness

21 Aug 2018

The IRDAI has directed all insurance companies to cover mental illness, citing a new law which came into force in May.

The insurance regulator, in a statement, referred to the Mental Healthcare Act, 2O17, which came into force on 29 May 2018.

Under one section of the Act, every insurer shall make provision for medical insurance for the treatment of mental illness on the same basis as is available for treatment of physical illness.

“All insurance companies are hereby directed to comply with the aforesaid provisions of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 with immediate effect,” IRDAI said in its order dated 16 August.
