Sometimes even a lion needs help

| 20 Dec 2018

Lions are symbols of strength and courage, and often depicted as king of the jungle. But even lions need help sometimes.

The BBC’s Natural History Unit was filming a pride of lions for the series Dynasties. It caught the scene of a young lion, out exploring on his own, straying too far from home and finding himself surrounded by a clan of 20 fierce hyenas.

It is not unheard of for groups of hyenas to take down lions – most often cubs or older individuals.

The producer Simon Blakeney remembers the moment the young male, Red, found himself in real trouble.

He said: “Initially he tried to show how dominant he was by chasing individual hyenas. But by the time he got over his bravado, he was surrounded by twenty or thirty of them and couldn’t escape. Each time he lashed out at one that came close, others would attack him from behind. He was vastly outnumbered, and trapped in a life and death situation.”

With the lion’s life on the line, thankfully an ally heard the commotion and came to his rescue. He lives to fight another day.

So whenever you feel stressed, when you feel like quitting or when the odds seem to be stacked against you, do not suffer alone. Reach out to your agency leader, approach your seniors, speak with someone you trust and admire.

Because sometimes even a lion needs help. And so do you.

Keep fighting and all the best!
