Anesthetist Shortage Extracts High Cost

Taiwan faces what it considers a dire shortage of qualified anesthesiologists, a situation that has exacted a high toll on the country. In 2003, there were 178 deaths in a million caused by complications from anesthesia during surgery, a rate 17 times higher than Japan and eight times greater than the US.
