Social media a necessity to reach tech-savvy prospects

The use of social media is fast-becoming a necessity for insurance advisers to reach younger and tech-savvy prospects and win business.

While getting started on social media for business may be daunting for some insurance advisers, there numerous user-friendly online tools and platforms that are available for free.

Tumblr, WordPress and Blogspot are some platforms very commonly used for blogging and website-building. These can be done for free or for a fee, premium services such as personalised URLs and templates can be purchased.

To keep up with multiple social media platforms such as facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, integrated social media platforms such as Hearsay Social, Finect, and AdvisorSocial, can help to create and manage posts across the various platforms. These integrated tools help advisers to schedule posts, monitor conversations and track follower counts from a single dashboard. They also feature the ability to archive and record posts, helping to ensure compliance with the Securities and Exchange Commission’s social media marketing guidelines, said GAMA International Journal.

Taking Twitter as an example, the journal added that advisers should strive for quality over quantity in terms of building a follower base. Experts say they should look at the reach of their tweets and which followers do the most to expand their reach. Josh Brown, CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, says, “It’s much less influential to have lots of random strangers following you than a strong group of people who care about what you’re writing and interact with you.”

Advisers also can use mobile apps, such as Snapchat, to generate business. The journal noted that Snapchat enables more than 100 million monthly active users to share videos, pictures and messages to individuals and groups. The app can be used to provide useful tips, send quick messages, perform market research, promote blog and other social media content, answer questions, and showcase their personality.
