Japan: Sompo Japan uses AI to decide fault in car accidents

Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance will use AI to examine car insurance claims, using GPS and dash cam recorder data to enable quicker claim settlements.
 
The Tokyo-based insurer plans to introduce the feature this year to cover around 100,000 vehicles in which customers have installed dash cam recorders. The company is developing the system with Genext, an image analysis specialist based in Yokohama, reported Nikkei Asian Review.
 
Dash cam images and GPS data will be used to reproduce a collision while factoring in vehicle speeds and road conditions. AI will analyse this information and use past accident data to compute fault percentages for the parties involved.
 
Conventional claims processing takes nearly two months including onsite investigations and settlement negotiations. AI will slash the time to just one to two weeks, according to the insurer, which is part of Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Holdings.
The company plans to use accident data to advise drivers on safety as well. A
