China: Ringing in a new era of (re)insurance this November

Source: Asia Insurance Review | Oct 2019

As China continues to open up its financial sector, there is a vast wealth of opportunities – from the Belt and Road Initiative to the Greater Bay Area and the growing reinsurance needs of China – for foreign insurers to tap. To help connect both prospective foreign and local players in the market and to provide direct insights on these opportunities, Asia Insurance Review (AIR) is once again organising the China Rendezvous event in Shanghai from 5 to 7 November this year at the Kerry Hotel Pudong in Shanghai.

The event, once a mainstay in the Chinese insurance and reinsurance calendar, is making a comeback after a short break with the theme ‘Brave New Era of Reinsurance in China’ to underscore new and innovative developments in the China market.

As the voice of the insurance industry in Asia, AIR is very proud to host the China Rendezvous this year given the growing importance of China in the global insurance scene and in response to repeated requests for a need for an insurance networking platform in China – the world’s largest economy by purchasing power parity according to the International Monetary Fund.

The three-day rendezvous will start with an opening cocktail on the evening of 5 November and will continue with two days of conference sessions in the morning and bilateral meetings in the afternoon to allow adequate time for learning, networking and business development.

Given the bilingual nature of delegates and speakers, there will also be simultaneous translations to allow interactive discussion and debate around myriad topics such as underwriting profitability, coping with regulatory changes, challenges and opportunities for the insurance industry in the digital era as well as managing Nat CAT, cyber risks, regulatory issues, governance, compliance and risk management issues.

A China Re C-level executive will be delivering the welcome address while the local industry keynote address will be given by PICC Re CEO Zhang Qing. Meanwhile, the international address and international industry keynote address will be delivered by International Insurance Society (IIS) president and CEO Michael Morrissey and AIG International General Insurance CEO Chris Townsend respectively.

Other speakers include local industry leaders such as Qianhai Re chairperson Feng Hong Juan, JingDong vice president and JingDong-Allianz general manager Xu Chunjun, Sunshine Insurance chief data scientist and officer Tian Fengzhan, Liangzibao (Quantum Insurance Technology) CEO Tang Peng, Minsheng Life Insurance executive director Huang Min, China Life Insurance general manager (strategy and marketing department) Hong Mei and Huatai Insurance general manager (strategy and business development) Luan Cheng Xiao.

International reinsurers will also mark their presence with Munich Re China CEO Steven Chang, Gen Re China head of P&C treaty Frank Wang and Swiss Re Beijing branch senior vice president Dr Gao Hang speaking at the conference.

Launched in 2000, the first China Rendezvous was held in Shanghai with the theme ‘Meeting the Reinsurance Needs of China’s Growing Insurance Industry’.

The upcoming rendezvous is sponsored by Singapore Re, Fairfax Financial Holdings and the Singapore College of Insurance and is supported by the IIS. A
