Road ahead for telematics in India may not be smooth

In August 2017 IRDAI issued a discussion paper on the potential of telematics in insurance-premium pricing. Both, traditional and new-kids-on-the-block, online insurers, are waiting for the green light and final regulations from the regulator so that they can frame their pricing policies using granular data such as driving behaviour, distance driven and time taken for each trip, and charge premiums based on how the vehicle is driven. Collecting granular data among other things would help the industry to frame pricing policies.
