Sri Lanka:Regulator appoints new chairman

Sri Lanka's insurance regulator, the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL) has announced that Dr Ajith Raveendra De Mel was appointed chairman and member of the board of directors earlier this year. He succeeds Mr Razik Zarook PC.

Dr De Mel serves as a senior lecturer in the University of Ruhuna’s Department of Mathematics, and is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Moratuwa’s Department of Mathematics.

He graduated from Missouri University of Science and Technology in the US with a PhD in mathematics with a focus on statistics. Other academic accomplishments include a bachelor of science with special honours in mathematics from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, a master of philosophy from the University of Ruhuna in Sri Lanka, a master of science in mathematics with a statistics concentration from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in the US and a master of science in statistics from Sam Houston State University in the US.

Dr De Mel is a member of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Mathematical Society and the American Statistical Association.
