The total insured cost of extreme weather events that impacted Australia in 1H2025 has exceeded A$1.8bn ($1.18bn), according to new data released by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA).
Incurred claims have:
- Reached almost A$200m across 11,500 claims from the floods in Mid-North Coast and Hunter.
- Exceeded 125,000 claims totalling A$1.36bn from ex-tropical cyclone Alfred.
- Reached A$274m across more than 11,000 claims from the floods in North Queensland.
“We have had a busy start to 2025 with three declared events totalling more than A$1.8bn in claims incurred to date,” said ICA director of mitigation and extreme weather response Liam Walter.
“While this damage bill is not as severe as first expected, we acknowledge that for many communities, recovery is still very much ongoing and there is still a long road ahead.”
