India:Health insurance renewals records high persistency

| 01 Oct 2025

A report by online insurance aggregator Policybazaar revealed that health insurance renewals in India have remained strong, with persistency ratio climbing steadily over the last five years

The report mentions that the number of policy persistency has grown by 4% to about 400 basis points, while gross written premium persistency has improved by 7% to nearly 700 basis points.

These numbers show a shift consumer behaviour towards health insurance as most policyholders are choosing to stay with the same insurer rather than switching or dropping out of coverage, with many even upgrading their covers with riders and higher sum insured.

The Covid-19 pandemic created huge awareness on health insurance across the country, and lifestyle-related health issues, such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol issues, asthma, obesity, and heart disease has created a huge demand for health insurance. The report mentions that the share of customers with such conditions in its new business mix has gone up by 25% in recent years.
