Global:85% of organisations report rise in AI-driven mobile attacks as employee use of genAI grows

Insurers may see greater demand for cyber insurance coverage as AI-driven mobile attacks rise. According to the Verizon 2025 Mobile Security Index (MSI), 85% of organisations reported an increase in mobile attacks, as more employees use generative AI (genAI) tools for work.

The study found that nearly all organisations (93%) said their employees have used genAI on mobile devices in their daily work. More than half of these businesses reported experiencing data compromise and increasingly sophisticated attacks.

About 64% of organisations cited data compromise resulting from employees entering sensitive or proprietary information into genAI tools as their top mobile device risk.

The report also found that only 17% of businesses have specific security controls against AI-assisted attacks, posing a critical risk as cybercriminals leverage genAI to increase both the volume and sophistication of their attacks.

Verizon Business VP of Global Cybersecurity Solutions Chris Novak said, “This year's Mobile Security Index is a clear wake-up call: mobile security is no longer a perimeter defence, but a battle fought in the palm of every employee’s hand. We talk about the perfect storm: with the rise of AI, we’re witnessing a Category 5 hurricane in mobile security, where AI is the wind — and human error is the open window.”

Mr Novak added that mobile security is no longer just a best practice but a business imperative that should include robust employee training, clear AI usage policies, and intelligent security solutions.

“The rapid adoption of genAI is a game-changer, and businesses of all sizes must rethink security measures aimed at AI-assisted attacks and support employees in leveraging technology securely,” he said.
