Indonesia:Regulator supports making travel insurance mandatory for foreign tourists

| 05 Jan 2026

The Indonesian insurance regulator, the Financial Service Authority (OJK), has expressed its support for making travel insurance mandatory for foreign visitors coming to Indonesia.

The proposal, if implemented, would not only add to the country’s insurance market but also provide greater protection against health and allied risks to the foreigners visiting Indonesia.

In a written statement issued in December 2025, the OJK head of the insurance, guarantee, and pension fund supervisory board Ogi Prastomiyono said making travel insurance mandatory for foreign tourists will provide tourists and other visitors better protection against potential risks during their travels, such as accidents, health emergencies or unexpected cancellations.

He said the proposal for putting a policy for this in place and making it mandatory is still under review but OJK is optimistic about its potential positive impact on all stakeholders.

Mr Ogi said, "The implementation of this policy needs to be further studied by considering the readiness of the ecosystem, the implementation mechanism, and consumer protection aspects, so that it can run effectively and sustainably."

He said this initiative can also provide a much-needed boost to the Indonesian insurance sector and be a catalyst for innovation to develop new products tailored to the needs of international tourists.
