India:Regulator extends the cut-off date for comments on reforms by a week

| 27 Oct 2026

The Indian insurance regulator, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has extended the deadline for comments on its proposed insurance reforms by a week to 31 October 2026. Originally the date for submission of comments was to close on 25 October 2026.

The regulator had issued a two-part consultation paper on 23 September 2026 and had invited  views from various stakeholders on proposed changes to the insurance distribution framework.

The IRDAI press release issued on 24 October 2026 said, “The consultation has received an encouraging response, with over 650 comments received so far. In view of the significant interest and to facilitate wider participation, the last date for submission of comments has been extended till 31 October 2026, providing additional time to stakeholders and members of the public to submit their feedback and suggestions.”

The proposals seek to reshape the economics of insurance distribution to make the system more efficient and inclusive. However, the proposals have sparked concerns across the industry over their potential impact on distribution costs, intermediary remuneration and the sustainability of existing business models.
