02 Oct 2017

The average life expectancy of the Chinese rose to 76.5 years in 2016 from 67.9 years in 1981, which means that it increased by 8.6 years in 35 years, according to a white paper released by the State Council Information Office last Friday.

Maternal mortality dropped from 88.9 per 100,000 persons in 1990 to 19.9 per 100,000 persons in 2016; and infant mortality declined from 34.7 per 1,000 in 1981 to 7.5 per 1,000 in 2016, says the document titled "Development of China's Public Health as an Essential Element of Human Rights".

The paper also points out that China has been vigorously improving its national medical security system, and the country has realised basic health care for almost every citizen. By the end of 2016, the government-run basic medical insurance scheme had more than 1.3 billion members nationwide with a coverage of above 95%.
