Philippines:Plenty of Filipino global icons to emulate as advisers strive to be world class

| 13 Nov 2017

Insurance advisers were urged to confidently pursue "First Class, World Class" standards at the 10th Philippine Life Insurance Congress. Examples of Filipinos who are global icons in various industries were highlighted by keynote speakers to demonstrate that the country already produces many global stars.

Mr Ryan Charland, CEO, Manulife Philippines, cited stars including Ms Pia Wurtzbach who was crowned Miss Universe in 2015; Mr Franz Ontal, who was a Nobel Peace Prize Awardee as part of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and Mr Michael Cinco, international fashion designer who counts the likes of Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga among his clients.

As for the industry, Ms Rizalina Mantaring, CEO, Sun Life of Canada (Philippines) Inc, pointed out that there are plenty of advisers in the market who have served on the committees of international bodies and associations, and many also qualify regularly for global recognition such as the Million Dollar Round Table.

She said: “If you think about it, your job is probably harder than overseas qualifiers. Here, it is harder to sell. People don’t understand insurance as much. We may not have products as attractive because of the capital markets. There’s difficulty even in getting to clients because of the traffic. It is not as easy, and you are probably even better than those who meet the same benchmarks from other countries.”

The benefits of striving for excellence are many folds. It brings pride to the individual, the company and the industry. She said: “It also helps to build trust and confidence in our industry when advisers are professionals. And in striving for excellence and in building the winning spirit, it is infectious and will help to impact people around you.”

Mr Charland concluded by saying: “The industry that we are all in is extremely noble and special. Our job is to help people. It is to make sure people’s family is protected. My challenge to all of you is to talk to as many Filipinos as you can and let your world class talent shine through.”

Close to 900 delegates attended the 10th PLIC organised by Life Underwriters Association of the Philippines and MDRT Philippines.
