Resilience is a long game

Source: Asia Insurance Review | Feb 2026

It is a topic that has been discussed to death, but it bears repeating; Nat CAT is the biggest issue facing the APAC region.

With climate change increasing the severity and frequency of events, rapid urbanisation in disaster-prone areas without adequate resilience planning, and low insurance penetration, the problems regarding Nat CAT and the protection gap gets exacerbated every year.

That is not to say that the insurance industry is not hard at work trying to solve these problems, though. The industry is hyper-aware of the problem and is constantly in talks with governments, NGOs and service providers to improve the situation. This could mean collecting better data or attempting to close the protection gap in affected communities or raising awareness of resilience planning and risk management in disaster-prone areas.

The insurance landscape in APAC is one of contrasts – immense challenges coupled with remarkable opportunities for transformation. While natural catastrophe risk continues to grow, so too does the industry’s capacity to respond with sophisticated modelling, parametric solutions, and public-private partnerships that can deliver faster, more targeted protection.

What becomes clear from the discussions and analyses in this issue is that the path forward requires collaboration across multiple fronts. Insurers cannot solve the protection gap alone; it demands coordinated efforts with governments willing to invest in infrastructure and resilience, regulators who can facilitate innovative product development, and communities educated about the value of insurance and risk mitigation.

Several articles you will read in the magazine this month will cover some of these solutions, while others highlight problems that might not have been on your radar previously.

As you read through this issue, you’ll encounter both cautionary tales and inspiring solutions. The message isn’t one of doom, but of urgency tempered with optimism. The APAC insurance industry stands at an inflection point, and the decisions made in the coming years will determine whether the region can build true resilience or continue to face mounting losses.

We hope the insights shared here contribute to that critical conversation. A
