Nepal was hit by a second powerful earthquake (magnitude-7.3) in less than three weeks after the destructive quake of 25 April (magnitude-7.8) that killed more than 8,000 people. The US Geological Survey said this latest quake which struck on 12 May is the largest aftershock to date.
Killing at least 66 people in Nepal, the latest quake which was centred 76 km east of the capital close to the border with Tibet, triggered landslides and brought down buildings, and left nearly 2,000 injured. Neighbouring India and China were not spared either, reporting at least 17 deaths in India and one in China.
In Nepal, aid workers reported serious damage following the second quake and said they needed more supplies which were already lacking before this new quake.
Mr Mahendra Shrestha, Chairman, Himalayan General Insurance Co Ltd had told Asia Insurance Review that they were overwhelmed by the scale of the damage from the first quake but has not commented on the second quake yet. The regulator, Dr Fatta Bahadur KC, Chairman of Beema Samiti has instructed insurers to simplify claims procedures and process claim with minimum documentation.
