The government has launched the country’s first farm insurance programme to help farmers avoid losses from agricultural activities, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman has announced.

“This is historic because this is the country’s first farmer insurance programme. We have prepared the insurance for cows and agricultural fields to prevent farmers suffering losses if their fields are affected by floods or pests,” said Mr Amran at the launch of the insurance scheme.

State-owned Enterprises Minister Ms Rini Soemarno said the farmer insurance scheme, managed by PT Asuransi Jasa Indonesia (Jasindo), is part of several government programmes aimed at improving farmers’ welfare, and involves three ministries: the Agriculture Ministry, the State-owned Enterprises Ministry and the Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Ministry, reported The Jakarta Post.

Ms Rini said the other schemes include subsidised fertilisers, seeds and pesticide and farmer entrepreneurship. A
