Two Talented Young Singaporeans Achieved ACII Designation In Under a Year

Source: Asia Insurance Review | Sep 2018

How did you manage to obtain your professional designation in such a record time? What were the sacrifices that
you had to make? What advice would you give to those currently undertaking their ACII professional studies?

I believe it is the fruition of the faith my lecturers and industry-mentors have placed in me; and my personal commitment to do the best I can in what I do- through persistence, perseverance and tenacity.

I am also really blessed to be one of only 16 fresh graduates selected to be part of Singapore’s flagship talent development programme-iMAP 2017. It is a structured fast-track talent programme that offers the Management Associates (MAs) valuable industry-experience through various rotations, mentorship, international exposure and special activities. These, coupled with the educational resources and support from Singapore College of Insurance, have placed me in a very unique position where I can see how my academic knowledge plays out in my work.

I think the No. 1 question I have been asked since attaining my designation is HOW? There is no shortcut or magic spell-just hard work!

My advice to those considering or currently undertaking their ACII is to set mini-goals for themselves.

I kept the deadlines pretty close to each other because I felt that it was easier to keep the momentum going; and although certain research may not be relevant for one assignment, it could be significant for another.

The study materials that came with the SCI modules are helpful in providing headline materials for the assignments. Deeper analysis and meaningful application of those materials come from paying close attention on the job in order to develop solutions that draws from theory but also practical enough to be applied in real life. Attending classes held by ACII lecturers in Singapore College of Insurance (SCI) enhanced the otherwise limited understanding of my industry due to my lack of experience and gave me a wider lens in tackling the various assignments.

Completing the ACII designation within 10 months is more a matter of conscientiously putting aside time away from work to complete the assignments. It also helped that I had strong support from my colleagues who were readily available to discuss or expound on more technical aspects of the assignments. As I worked on my assignments, I also solidified my understanding and appreciation of the industry as a whole, which I have no doubt will bring greater value to my career on top of the designation.

I would advise other ACII candidates to tap on the various networks they have developed in their career as they are working on their assignments as their real life experiences can provide useful ideas in tackling the assignments.

"Our insurance leaders of tomorrow will face a whole new world. Business can no longer be as usual. Tectonic shifts in technology are changing and disrupting the traditional insurance business models, and the growth of a whole new generation of ‘digital natives’ will transform dramatically the face of customer engagement. This spawns a whole new suite of skills and knowledge and a talent pool that has to have the relevant mindsets to lead and transform the insurance industry. Our young talent must be handpicked and fast-tracked so that they can be better equipped to do so."
