Asia: Moody’s Analytics expands insurance actuarial modelling team
Moody’s Analytics has announced a series of appointments in its Hong Kong office, expanding the team focused on insurance modelling and analytics across the Asia Pacific region.
 
Mr Andrew Waters, senior director, will oversee market strategy and business expansion in the region, where Moody’s Analytics has 12 offices. He is moving from the firm’s London office.
 
Ms Shar Choi, director, will be focused on actuarial modelling solutions in the region. She joins the company from PwC Boston, where she led its modelling team for life actuarial services. In her new role, she will be applying her extensive experience to guide insurers on how modelling can be done more effectively and efficiently.
 
Mr Fred Pan, director, will lead actuarial client support activities in the region. He is moving from the Toronto office.
 
Ms Ramla Kacem, associate director, will engage with insurers on Moody’s IFRS17 proposition. Ms Kacem has extensive experience with regulatory compliance solutions, having spent time implementing them in Europe for Solvency II, and more recently in Asia out of Moody’s Singapore office.
 
Asia: Ultimate Risk Solutions announces new representatives in Philippines and Japan
Ultimate Risk Solutions (URS) announced its engagement of Dr Pedro P Benedicto Jr as its Philippine representative and Mr Junji Yamamoto as its Japanese representative. Both appointments will be effective August 1, 2018. This reflects the company’s commitment to the Philippine insurance industry. Having a representative in the market ensures that client needs are immediately responded to.
 
Dr Benedicto has a PhD in insurance and Risk Management is also a candidate for Doctor of Business Administration. He is also the founding and current chairman of the Society of Risk Management Professionals, Inc. He has more than 30 years of experience in the non-life insurance industry in the Philippines with more than 10 years of CEO experience. He has served the industry in various industry associations in various capacities as Chairman or Director/ Trustee.
 
Mr Yamamoto is a graduate of the Faculty of Law of Keio University, Tokyo. He has more than 40 years of experience in the non-life insurance industry, the most part of which he spent in Japan for Munich Re Tokyo. In his diverse managerial assignments in areas of risk transfer design and strategies, reinsurance treaty and facultative analyses, underwriting and pricing, he was recognised and respected by clients as a consummate professional  His last position at Munich Re Tokyo was director and executive advisor.
 
Hong Kong: Change in Peak Re’s board of directors
Peak Re has announced that Mr Li Tao has been appointed as chairman of the board of directors, Ms Chen Kaihong as executive director and Ms Yuan Xi as non-executive director, all with effect from 27 July 2018. They will all serve as members of various board committees of Peak Re in addition to taking their seats on the board.
 
Mr Li, an existing non-executive director of Peak Re, is the VP at Fosun International and CEO of Fosun Insurance Group. He has experience of managing financial lines, actuarial, investments and overseas insurance business. Prior to joining Fosun International, he held several senior positions at China Taiping Insurance Group. 
 
Ms Chen serves as the CFO of Peak Re, overseeing the company’s financial and operational management. Ms Chen has more than 18 years of accounting and financial experience in both the insurance and reinsurance industry. Prior to joining Peak Re, she held several senior positions at insurance organisations including Lloyd’s Beijing representative office and Swiss Re. 
 
Ms Yuan serves as the CFO of the Fosun Insurance Group. She has extensive knowledge and experience in the insurance and reinsurance sectors, specialising in actuarial and risk management. Prior to joining Fosun International, she held several senior positions in various insurance and reinsurance companies. 
 
In addition to the above changes, effective from 27 July 2018, Mr Guo Guangchang, chairman of Fosun International, resigned as non-executive director of Peak Re, and Mr Wang Qunbin resigned as chairman of the board but remains as non-executive director and a board committee member of Peak Re. Mr Guo and Mr Wang will increase their focus on the strategic direction, development of major projects and new business opportunities of Fosun International. 
 
Korea: Guy Carpenter appoints president and regional head
Guy Carpenter announced the appointment of Mr Bengt Johnsen as president and head of the Southeast Asia and Korea (SEAK) region, effective 18 January 2019. He will succeed Mr Richard Jones, who was promoted to chairman of the Asia Pacific region in August 2017. Mr Johnsen will be based in Singapore and will report to Mr Tony Gallagher, CEO of Asia Pacific.
 
Mr Johnsen will oversee Guy Carpenter’s activities in the SEAK region and will be responsible for further developing its local capabilities to help clients drive profitable growth.
 
Singapore: Prudential hires new chief customer officer
OCBC chief marketing officer Goh Theng Kiat will be joining Prudential Singapore as chief customer officer. He will be replacing Ms Angela Hunter to champion customer centricity across the organisation. In this role, he oversees customer segments, brand and marketing, data analytics, products and events. He will report to Prudential Singapore CEO Wilf Blackburn.
 
Mr Goh joined as CMO over four years ago. Prior to that he was with Akzo Nobel Paints (Asia Pacific) for over seven years, last holding the role of global category innovation director. He was also with Imperial Tobacco Group, British Tobacco and P&G, before joining OCBC.
 
Singapore: AXA Insurance appoints new chief risk and compliance officer and new director of finance operations
AXA Insurance Singapore has appointed Mr Adrian Goh as chief risk and compliance officer and a member of the executive committee, effective 17 July 2018. This move comes as Mr Bruno Pinson, the former chief risk and compliance officer, pursues his next career opportunity as director, finance operations.
 
Mr Pinson led the risk function in Singapore from 2013, and added legal and compliance to his portfolio in 2016. During this time, he successfully established the enterprise risk management framework to provide a consistent understanding and approach to managing risk, and was instrumental in promoting and embedding a positive risk culture at AXA Singapore.
 
Mr Goh, who joins AXA from Manulife, has over 16 years of experience in insurance, operational and liquidity risk management across the various insurers in Singapore. In his previous role with Manulife, he put in place an enterprise risk management framework covering both financial and operational risk as well as various risk analytic initiatives.
 
Singapore: GoBear appoints as new CEO
GoBear has appointed Mr Adrian Chng to succeed Mr Andre Hesselink as its new CEO from 16 July. The appointment will see Mr Chng lead the management team with Ms Ivonne Bojoh, Mr Frank Stevenaar, and Mr Marnix Zwart.
 
Mr Chng co-founded two FinTech start-ups and sits on the board of others. Most recently, he was CEO of Fintonia, a merchant bank he founded in 2015 that invests in FinTech companies in ASEAN and Hong Kong. In addition, he co-founded Credolab and AsiaKredit in 2016 and 2017 respectively. He is also known for leading Asian jobs portal JobsDB.com and a key achievement was its A$1bn merger with JobStreet.com in 2014.
 
Global: FWD appoints new managing director and group chief operating officer
FWD Group announced the appointment of Mr Robert Schimek as managing director and group COO.
 
Mr Schimek has extensive international leadership experience in the global insurance industry. He was most recently president and CEO of AIG’s global commercial insurance business. In this role he was responsible for the company’s global property, casualty, financial lines and specialty products and services.
 
Previously, he was CEO of the Americas for AIG, responsible for its insurance operations in the US, Canada and Latin America. Prior to that, he served as president and CEO of Europe, the Middle East and Africa where he managed all aspects of its insurance business for the region. Mr Schimek previously served as the CFO of AIG’s global property casualty business and before joining AIG, he was a partner at Deloitte & Touche where he worked for 18 years.
 
Global: AIG reveals new chief executive for Europe
AIG has named Mr Thomas Lillelund as CEO of AIG Europe. The move will see Mr Anthony Baldwin, current CEO of AIG Europe, become chief executive of AIG’s UK entity. This follows the news from April that the business is setting up two new entities, one in the UK and one in Luxembourg, in response to the UK’s impending exit from the EU.
 
Mr Baldwin has been with AIG since 1995 when he joined the financial lines division as financial institutions manager for the UK and Ireland. He has held a number of senior roles within the business and has been CEO in the UK, in addition to his European role, since January 2016.
 
Global: RMS promotes new chief financial officer
RMS announced the appointment of Mr Reed Birnbaum as CFO, from his prior post of senior VP, finance and analytics at RMS.
 
As CFO, Mr Birnbaum will report directly to CEO Karen White, and serve as a member of the company’s executive committee. He will oversee the company’s financial management, including financial planning and reporting, accounting, tax, treasury, procurement and facilities functions. With his appointment, he also joins the board of directors of RMS Japan.
 
Mr Birnbaum brings more than 20 years of finance experience across private and public companies to RMS. Prior to joining RMS, he was VP of finance and corporate controller of Intermolecular, including through the company’s successful IPO in 2011. There he was responsible for corporate, field, and global finance and accounting. Prior to Intermolecular, Mr Birnbaum held positions in finance and accounting at Better Place, BigBand Networks, Cellon and Exodus. He started his career in public accounting at KPMG, where he earned his license as a certified public accountant. A
