Australia: Severe thunderstorms lead to over 55,000 insurance claims

The storms in eastern Australia that took place from 19-21 January appear to be the country’s most severe thunderstorms since December 2018, said AIR Worldwide.
The event has led to at least 55,000 insurance claims with estimated losses at A$514m ($343m) according to the Insurance Council of Australia as of 3 February. About 70% of claims are for domestic motor vehicles.
According to AIR, these storms were due to an unusual synoptic scale setup. A low-pressure trough had brought instability to the region with warm, moist air from the Coral Sea to the east combining to create an ideal atmosphere for storm development. A
