India: General Insurance Council says motor policies must be renewed on time

The General Insurance Council has clarified that a notification from the Ministry of Road Transport extending the validity of all vehicle documents from February to 31 December does not include insurance policies.
 
The council said that this means motor insurance policies have to be renewed as per the renewal date.
 
Earlier this year, the central government granted relief to motor policyholders by allowing them to defer their renewal, if this fell during the lockdown period between 25 March and 14 April to postpone the payment of premiums till 21 April to ensure continuity of third-party liability motor insurance. A
