Source: Asia Insurance Review | Nov 2016

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Lloyd’s Register Foundation have launched an institute which will spearhead transformative research on the scientific understanding of risk and its practical application through a multi-disciplinary approach that brings together science, engineering, social sciences, and humanities.

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk at NUS is the first international academic and public outreach institution of its kind in Asia. It aims to serve as a trusted and authoritative voice to enhance public dialogue on risk issues through research, education and outreach.

Established with a GBP10 million (US$12.3 million) gift from the Lloyd’s Foundation, a charitable foundation in the UK and contribution of GBP11 million from NUS, it was launched on 3 October.

Research
The Institute will undertake in-depth international research with an Asia-centric focus to offer decision makers in governments and businesses in the region access to previously unavailable data and information to positively inform their actions and policies. It will undertake up to 30 research projects in the first five years.

Talent attraction
The Institute will also offer up to 30 Fellowships in the first five years, for the best young scholars in the region to pursue research related to risk communication, and will also conduct training programmes for industry and government.
