Mr Yoshihiro Kawai, Secretary General of the IAIS, will retire following its Annual Conference in November this year. He will be succeeded by Mr Jonathan Dixon of South Africa’s Financial Services Board, who will join the Secretariat in September for a two-month transition before taking over.
Mr Kawai joined the IAIS in 1998 as Deputy Secretary General, before assuming his current position in 2003. In an IAIS media statement on the change, Ms Victoria Saporta, Executive Committee Chair, recognised his numerous contributions. “Under his leadership,” she said, “the IAIS has been transformed into the international standard setter for insurance and become an integral part of the international financial architecture to support global financial stability.”
He led the Secretariat through a period of enormous growth, including the adoption of comprehensive ICPs, identification of G-SIIs (global systemically important insurers) and development of G-SII policy measures and the Basic Capital requirement, the first ever global insurance capital standard.
The next Secretary-General, Mr Dixon, has served as Deputy Executive Officer of the Financial Services Board of South Africa since 2008 and has been an active participant in the IAIS, having held a number of leadership positions including IAIS Executive Committee member since 2009 and Chair of the Implementation Committee since 2012.
