The Ministry of Agriculture is optimistic that it can achieve the agricultural insurance target this year of coverage for 1m hectares of farmland registered in the Rice Farm Business Insurance (AUTP) programme.
In 2018, the AUTP scheme covered 806,200 hectares, or 80.6% of the then target of 1m hectares, reported Tribunnews citing data from the ministry. The 2018 coverage was lower than the 997,961 hectares covered in 2017.
Claims for 2017 covered 25,028 hectares, while loss claims in 2018 only reached 12,194 hectares.
To attract farmers to join the insurance programme, education is carried out by both the AUTP and Jasa Asuransi Indonesia (Jasindo). In addition, the Agricultural Insurance System (SIAP) has been launched to make it easier for farmers to enrol in the scheme and to facilitate data collection.
The government will continue to push because there are still many farmers who are not yet aware of the programme, said the director general of Agriculture Infrastructure at the Agriculture Ministry, Mr Sarwo Edhy.
The government scheme requires farmers to pay 20% of the premiums with 80% subsidised by public coffers. A
