IUMI holds event in China for first time

The International Union of Marine Insurers’ (IUMI) second Asia Forum was held in Shanghai on 22-23 May 2019. The event was hosted by Shanghai Institute of Marine Insurance (SIMI) in cooperation with IUMI and its Asia hub, the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI). Under the theme ‘New Trends in Marine Insurance’, topics such as Fintech, global trade tensions, cyber risks and green shipping were discussed and presented by leading marine insurance professionals from around the world. The event attracted the attendance of over 300 practitioners.
 
The IUMI Asia Forum was first introduced in 2018 to reflect the importance of the ever-expanding marine insurance market in Asia. But unlike the IUMI annual conference, the Asia forum has a wider spectrum of participants from all areas of the marine insurance, broking and related service sectors. The event also aims to attract local participants, in particular the young marine insurance practitioners, by having more focus on regional issues.  
 
“Our membership globally is very important to us, they are the heart and soul of our organisation, and we will continue to develop and deliver an extensive package of high quality and relevant services for them. This made us develop a balanced strategy to ensure both enhanced services for existing members, and to pay more attention to growth areas in Asia, Africa and Latin America where relevant and exciting new developments need our attention,” said IUMI president Richard Turner. A
