China:COVID-19 pandemic has cost health insurers at least US$176m to date

| 31 Jul 2020

Health insurers have covered CNY1.23bn ($176m) of the treatment costs of COVID-19 patients as of 19 July.

The total insurance payout represented 67% of the total COVID-19 medical costs, said Xiong Xianjun, an official with China's National Healthcare Security Administration.

Medical bills of 135,500 inpatients, confirmed or suspected, were settled by medical insurance, reported Xinhua News Agency.

On the outbreak of COVID-19, the authorities adjusted medical insurance policies to enable COVID-19 patients to get treatment with delayed settlement of accounts.
