Indonesia:Call for motorcycle taxi drivers to be included in the national health insurance schemes

| 16 Sep 2025

Indonesian legislators have called for online motorcycle taxi drivers to be included in the national health and employment insurance schemes (BPJS Kesehatan and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan).

According to a news report in https://jakartaglobe.id, the proposal has been mooted by the House of Representatives Deputy Commission IX Chairman Yahya Zaini.

Mr Yahya said, “The drivers must be part of the BPJS schemes under a mandatory mechanism, with fair contributions that also involve the ride-hailing companies.” Mr Yahya was speaking to news reporters recently.

He said beyond healthcare and workplace safety protection, drivers deserve a clear employment status and for this there must be a transparent framework for the relationship between drivers and platform operators to prevent exploitation and blurred corporate responsibility.

In his interaction, Mr Yahya urged lawmakers to ensure these issues are addressed in the bill. According to him, the legislation should not be seen as a mere response to drivers’ demonstrations, but as a concrete step toward protecting workers who play a significant role in the national digital economy.
