Thailand:Regulator launches insurance literacy activities in tourist city

| 02 Oct 2025

The insurance regulator of Thailand, the Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC), launched the "Proactive Insurance Promotion to the Regional Level in 2025" at Chiang Khan, Loei Province.

The project aims to develop insurance literacy among citizens and elevate Thailand’s insurance system as a tool for risk management across life, property and business dimensions in the tourist city of Chiang Khan, a town full of ancient wooden houses.

According to OIC deputy secretary-general for intermediary and regional insurance supervision Wasumdee Wasinon at the event, with the present world filled with risks and uncertainties, including natural disasters, accidents, illnesses and various emergencies, insurance “cannot be viewed merely as a contract”, but rather as a tool for managing life and business risks.

Ms Wasumdee also highlighted that coverage helps alleviate the burden of unexpected events, mitigating economic impacts and building confidence in families, communities and society.

For instance, at the launch, Chiang Khan Subdistrict Municipality mayor Kamol Kongpin identified “fires in old wooden houses” as a major risk in Chiang Khan; Office of Tourism and Sports policy analyst for Loei Province Monthakan Kongsamran noted the importance of tourist safety; and Loei Chamber of Commerce president Ratthaphon Luengwongpaisan pointed out that insurance helps “support businesses” and allows them to move forward when facing losses.
