Korea:Insurance payout disputes drive nearly 90% of non-life damage claims in Korea

According to the Korea Consumer Agency, disputes over insurance payouts accounted for nearly 90% of all non-life insurance damage relief claims submitted over the past three years, from 2022 through the first half of 2025, reported a local news site.

An analysis of these claims shows that middle-aged and older individuals were most affected.

Applicants aged 40 to 60 accounted for 74.4% (1,829 cases) of total claims, with those in their 50s representing the largest share at 29.1% (716 cases).

By type of insurance, actual loss insurance was the most frequently claimed at 42.0% (1,034 cases), followed by health insurance at 35.5% (874 cases), accident insurance at 7.2% (177 cases), and automobile insurance at 5.9% (144 cases).

The primary reason for submitting claims was disputes over insurance payouts, which made up 88.0% of applications. The most specific issue cited was non-payment of insurance money, accounting for 64.2% (1,579 cases), while disagreements over the calculation of payout amounts were also significant, representing 20.4% (501 cases).

When examining claims by insurer, Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. received the highest number of applications with 465, followed by Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. with 452, and DB Insurance Co., Ltd. with 359. When adjusted for the number of policies held, Heungkuk Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. had the highest claim rate per million contracts at 44.3, followed by Lotte Non-Life Insurance Co., Ltd. at 29.8, and Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. at 27.6.

Overall, the average agreement rate among the eight insurers analyzed was 28.3%. Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. recorded the highest agreement rate at 31.1%, while Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. had the lowest at 23.2%.
