The Nat CAT events that struck Vietnam in 2025 till November have left 409 dead or missing and caused estimated economic loss of over VND85tn ($3.2bn). Over 700 people were injured in these catastrophic events that have ravaged Vietnam since the beginning of the year.
According to a news report by Vietnam News Agency, the severe Nat CAT events have also caused the collapse of 337,297 houses and 553,417 ha of rice and other crops, along with 376,792 ha of other plants, to be flooded and damaged.
Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority has reported that 14 storms and 5 tropical depressions have occurred in the East Sea/South China Sea so far in 2025. The total number is only one short of the record set in 2017 – a year that saw 20 storms and tropical depressions.
In addition to storms and tropical depressions, Vietnam also faced extreme heavy rainfall and historically unprecedented flooding across 13 river basins in the northern and central regions of the country. Some of the major urban areas, especially in the low-lying regions experienced major flash floodings and landslides.
The news agency reported that these events have posed serious threats to disaster-prevention infrastructure, public works, and dyke systems, causing extremely severe losses of life and property.
