Ping An road safety programme cuts accidents at high-risk intersections

Ping An Property & Casualty Insurance (Ping An P&C ) has reported a 50.4% year-on-year reduction in claims at 1,620 high-risk intersections during China's 2026 Spring Festival holiday, highlighting the potential of technology-driven risk prevention in insurance.

The results form part of Ping An Insurance Group's "Traffic Lights" Road Safety Risk Mitigation Public Welfare Programme, which seeks to shift insurance services from post-accident compensation towards pre-accident prevention.

Launched in July 2025, the programme uses big data and artificial intelligence to identify high-risk road sections by analysing historical claims, traffic accident blackspots, real-time weather and road scenario data.

As of August 2026, the initiative had expanded to all 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China, with more than 4,900 high-risk road sections upgraded. More than 50,000 sets of safety equipment, including intelligent traffic lights, flashing warning lights and speed bumps, have also been installed, while more than 2,500 road safety education campaigns have reached over 690 million people cumulatively.

Ping An P&C also deployed technology to address weather and traffic-related risks.

In Guizhou, 224 IoT-enabled micro-meteorological stations were installed across 56 vulnerable road sections to provide real-time risk alerts and support measures such as ice removal, snow clearance and traffic control. In Hunan, drones equipped with BeiDou navigation and night-visibility technology were used for expressway patrols, incident detection and remote evacuation support.

During the Spring Festival holiday from 15–23 February, claims at the 1,620 high-risk intersections fell 50.4% year-on-year, while average property loss per claim declined 19.3%.

The programme also recorded a 32.1% year-on-year reduction in claims at the same intersections during the 1–5 May International Labor Day holiday, with average property loss per claim falling 20.4%. Ping An said the initiative demonstrates how insurance can play a broader role in risk governance and social resilience by identifying and mitigating risks before losses occur.

Ping An P&C added that technology-enabled prevention can improve road safety while helping insurers optimise underwriting risk structures.
