A recent report by Bloomberg on the prospective buyout of LPI Capital Bhd by Japan's MS&AD Insurance Group, could create the largest general insurance company in the Malaysian market.
According to MBSB Research, the deal would create Malaysia’s largest general insurer, considering that MS&AD is already a major shareholder of MSIG Malaysia and is likely to merge LPI and MSIG into a single, larger entity after any takeover.
Talks for the merger are in its preliminary stage, and none of the parties had made any official announcement. LPI currently holds 8.3% share of the Malaysian general insurance market and MSIG holds 8% and together, their 16.3% share would make them the industry’s market leader, ahead of Allianz’s 15.6% in the first half of 2026.
MBSB Research noted that the transaction highlights a broader surge in insurance sector mergers and acquisitions. This trend is primarily driven by Bank Negara Malaysia’s backing of industry consolidation, fierce market competition, and the persistently low valuations of publicly traded insurance companies.
