South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has launched a digital claims system for fisheries policy insurance, fully transitioning the claims process for fishermen's disaster compensation insurance online.
The ministry held a public briefing on the new Fisheries Policy Insurance Web-EDI system together with the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives.
The Web-EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) platform enables hospitals and fishing vessel repair centres to transmit claim-related data electronically to the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, allowing claims to be processed in near real time.
Previously, fishermen making disaster insurance claims were required to collect medical records or documents related to fishing vessel repairs and submit them in person to their local fisheries cooperative. The new digital system eliminates the need for physical visits, reducing administrative burdens and streamlining the claims process.
The ministry expects the average insurance claims settlement period to be cut in half, from around 30 days after claim submission to approximately 15 days.
The initiative forms part of the government's broader efforts to digitalise public services and improve access to insurance benefits for the fisheries sector.
