Sompo International agrees to acquire Brazil's Fator Seguradora to expand corporate insurance business

Japanese insurer Sompo International Holdings Ltd. announced on 21 July that a wholly owned subsidiary had entered into an agreement to acquire Fator Seguradora in Brazil. Completion of the transaction remains subject to approval from the relevant regulatory authorities.

The acquisition represents an important step in Sompo’s strategy to expand its presence in Brazil’s corporate insurance market, with a focus on specialised, higher-value solutions. The transaction will strengthen the company’s ability to grow in business lines where Fator Seguradora has an established presence and recognised expertise.

“This transaction is fully aligned with our sustainable growth strategy and our ambition to expand our relevance in technical segments with higher added value. Fator Seguradora has a strong and recognised presence in lines such as Surety and Financial Lines, which are growth segments for Sompo. This complementary nature accelerates our capacity to expand in these markets while broadening the range of sophisticated solutions available to clients and strengthening relationships with our broker partners,” said Sompo Brazil CEO Alfredo Lalia Neto.

“Brazil is a strategically important market for Sompo, and this transaction reflects our disciplined approach to expanding in lines where we see strong client demand, technical opportunity and long-term value creation. Fator Seguradora’s capabilities complement our existing platform in Brazil and support our ambition to further strengthen our offering in specialty and corporate insurance across International Markets,” said International Markets Chief Executive Officer Alessa Quane.

Fator Seguradora focuses on corporate insurance and business risk management solutions, with particular strength in Property, Surety and Financial Lines. Sompo currently ranks among the five largest insurers in Brazil in the Corporate and Agribusiness Insurance segments. Upon completion of the transaction, its position in the market will be further strengthened.

Until regulatory approval is completed, there will be no changes to either company’s operations. Both organisations will continue to operate independently, with commercial teams maintaining normal activities to serve brokers and clients, ensuring continuity, stability and quality of service.

Mr Neto said, “We are building a consistent growth trajectory based on specialisation, technical discipline and proximity to the market. The combination of our operations represents not only greater scale but, above all, an enhanced ability to respond to the increasingly complex demands of corporate clients. We will remain focused on ensuring a smooth transition, preserving the value of our relationships with clients and broker partners, and maintaining the excellence that defines Sompo’s performance.”
