| 24 Aug 2026

The number of claims for the Kumamoto earthquake of 28 July 2026, accepted by the member companies of the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ), have exceeded 40,000 as on 31 July 2026.

A media release by the GIAJ on 18 August 2026 said the 40,291 claims accepted as on 31 July 2026  represent the total combined figures for GIAJ member companies and the Foreign Non-Life Insurance Association of Japan’s member companies, as of 31 July 2026.

According to the release, the number of “accepted claims” includes cases where insurance
companies have received requests for damage investigations of dwellings and/or household goods, and consultations or inquiries about earthquake insurance coverage, or policyholder contracts.

The Kumamoto prefecture received the maximum number of claims (37,620). Kumamoto was followed by 922 in Fukuoka, 396 in Kagoshima, 244 in Miyazaki, 222 in Saga, 191 in Nagasaki and 124 in Oita. All seven prefectures are located in the Kyushu southwestern Japan region.

Kumamoto experienced the maximum severity of the 7-magnitude quake on 28 July 2026. 7 magnitude is considered the highest level on Japan’s seismic intensity scale.

The GIAJ plans to announce detailed data regarding the temblor in mid-September, including the amount of insurance payments.
