| 08 Oct 2026

Premium discounts recognising cyclone mitigation measures have reached A$9.7m ($6.8m) across homes reinsured by the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool, according to the latest quarterly statistics released by the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC).

The Cyclone Reinsurance Pool statistics as of 30 June 2026 show the cyclone pool reinsures approximately 3.2m buildings representing more than A$2.5tn in aggregate building sums insured, while home reinsurance premium rates remained broadly stable.

Other findings include:

  • Total annual cyclone pool premiums are approximately A$675m across home, strata and small- and medium enterprise (SME).
  • Average annual cyclone pool premiums are approximately A$193 for home, $820 for strata and $252 for SME risks.
  • The pool reinsures approximately 3.05m home buildings, 72,000 strata buildings and 99,000 SME buildings.
  • Home reinsurance premium rates remain broadly stable. Reported home and SME risk counts increased this quarter following insurer corrections to previously reported data.

Claims activity

The cyclone pool has received 133,078 claims to date, with a total net incurred value of approximately A$1.65bn. As of 31 July 2026, ARPC had paid approximately A$1.37bn in claims.

During the 2Q2026, ARPC continued to receive and pay claims from cyclone events in previous seasons, including tropical cyclones Jasper and Alfred.

Mitigation and resilience

The cyclone pool continues to support risk reduction through premium incentives for eligible mitigation measures. As of 30 June 2026, A$9.7m in mitigation discounts have been applied to in-force home premiums, up from $9m reported on 31 December 2025.

Mitigation discounts have also been extended to strata and SME properties, with take-up to be included in future reports as insurers begin collecting and reporting this information to ARPC.

Coverage insights

All home properties reinsured through the cyclone pool include wind cover showed that as of 30 June 2026, 86% of home building policies included flood cover and 64% included storm surge cover, while 87% of home contents policies included flood cover and 66% included storm surge cover.

Since the cyclone pool commenced, the proportion of home building and contents policies that include storm surge cover has increased by approximately 10 percentage points, while the proportion with riverine flood cover has remained broadly stable at just under 90%.
