Thailand's National Disaster Insurance Policy, under the government's 'Disaster Insurance for the People Project' is facing its first test with flash floods in Lamphun Province and windstorms in Chiang Mai Province, that occurred on 5 October 2026 following heavy rainfall. Coverage for 30m households nationwide under the government initiative began on 1 October 2026.
According to a statement by Thailand’s insurance regulator, the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC), the event caused widespread damage to homes and agricultural land, with reports of fatalities.
As the country is still in the initial phase of the National Disaster Insurance Policy’s implementation, Lamphun Province is coordinating with the OIC to develop guidelines for evidence verification and collection, as well as the online process to expedite the claims process.
Additionally, the OIC is accelerating the dissemination of information regarding the National Disaster Insurance Policy to ensure that the public is aware of their rights, coverage and claims processes.
