Australia:Insurers report more than 68,000 claims in relation to cyclone Alfred

| 19 Jun 2025

Australia's Cyclone Reinsurance Pool (cyclone pool) has released an updated summary following cyclone Alfred, which brought rainfall and destructive winds to communities in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Insurers participating in the cyclone pool have reported a total of 68,684 claims as of 16 June 2025, covering residential, small business and strata properties. The majority of claims received were for food spoilage and property damage due to severe winds, fallen trees or water ingress in homes.

Based on modelling and claims data provided by insurers participating in the cyclone pool, estimated insured losses from the event are also currently projected to be approximately A$1.44bn ($940m).

“Ex-tropical cyclone Alfred caused widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. The cyclone pool is working closely with insurers to facilitate the reinsurance process and ensure claims are managed promptly,” said ARPC chief executive Christopher Wallace.

“While the full scale of loses may take some time to emerge, we have already commenced making payments to insurers for eligible claims under the pool, helping to speed up the recovery process,” added Dr Wallace.

The cyclone pool provides reinsurance to insurers in relation to cyclone and cyclone-related flooding risks covered by home, contents, residential strata and small business insurance. ARPC has comprehensive arrangements to pay reinsurance claims to insurers for cyclone events, supported by premiums, reserves and the $10bn Commonwealth guarantee.
