India: Private insurers shunned in flagship health insurance scheme

Most states in India are implementing the flagship government backed health insurance scheme for the poor without the participation of private insurance companies.
Instead, they either collaborate with public sector insurance companies or set up a trust to implement the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). The central government allows states and territories to choose the mode of operation for the scheme.
While only nine states have opted for a pure health insurance model, seven states have chosen mixed or hybrid models, in which a majority of insurers are from the public sector. Seventeen other states adopt the trust model, reported Livemint. A
