Bangladesh: Govt urged to make motor third-party liability insurance compulsory

Rights activists and transport experts are urging the authorities to make motor third-party liability insurance mandatory.
At a recent roundtable on compensation for road accident victims, Accident Research Institute of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology former director Professor Moazzem Hossain said that road accident insurance claims in the country were almost nil. Statistics on the number of these cases are unavailable, reported New Age Bangladesh.
The Road Safety Foundation said that third-party insurance had been made mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1983. But this was made optional in the newly enacted Road Transport Act, 2018.
