Thailand: OIC adopts digital technology to handle insurance disputes

Source: Asia Insurance Review | Jun 2023

Thailand’s insurance regulator, the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC), has launched an online arbitration system to resolve disputes.

OIC secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn said that the digital system would make dispute resolution more convenient and faster. It would also reduce the cost of proceedings, reported Thai Post.

E-arbitration
The e-arbitration system on the OIC’s portal allows the submission of petitions, preparation of the arbitrator’s award; as well as data storage, among various functions. The system supports more efficient data reporting and analysis related to arbitration cases. The e-arbitration system was designed after taking into account problems faced in the previous manual dispute resolution system.

In addition, users of the e-arbitration service can access and follow the progress of their cases. Insurers can reduce costs and expenses in the process without having to travel to the arbitrator’s office. The burden of document processing is also reduced.

Digital transformation of regulatory functions
The OIC has been applying technology to perform various operations both in regulating and promoting the insurance sector. In particular, it has improved its website by integrating into it a chatbot that makes it convenient for people to obtain insurance information any time of the day. Also included is a feature for users to search for OIC offices across the country accompanied by a Google Map system. A
