The foreign exchange reserves of major Asian economies have never been stronger. Yield hungry investors are chasing the attractive Asian combo of robust economic growth and still generous yields. The prospects of further liberalisation of economy in the region is further catalysing the investment scenario in Asia. This is despite the Fed-rates inching up gradually in recent times. Leading economists attribute this record surge in foreign exchange reserves on the back of sizeable investments, to the resilience and promise of the Asian economies.

This steady capital inflow, pouring in from investors disheartened in the developed markets, have swollen coffers. The weakened dollar too has helped Asia’s central banks to tackle any volatility in the global economic system.

The Asian insurers are not untouched by this generous and steady inflow of funds. With low penetration in general and at times profits coming in from investments and not from core underwriting business activity, it becomes imperative for them to understand the investment scenario in the region better for improved yields.

The 5th Asia Investment Management Summit for Insurance being held in Hong Kong will provide a platform to insurers in Asia to debate the existing investment market conditions, forecast Asian equity markets and opportunities for investment in these markets in 2018. It will also be an opportunity to learn and plan how to develop insurers’ investment operations as Asia liberalises further.

One Belt One Road project and growing GCC bond market are better-known areas for Asian insurance investment managers. Investments in agriculture, InsurTechs and Green investments, India’s real estate market after the passage of Real Estate Regulatory Act and environmental and social issues like investment in tobacco industry are however areas, that are yet to be much in vogue, will also be discussed to explore and chart out newer investment avenues.
