New space sustainability benchmarks will be developed to address the issue of debris in the Earth's orbit. Space debris poses an alarming risk for satellites and infrastructure operating in orbit. According to Lloyd's, there are around 100m pieces of debris that are large enough (bigger than 1mm) to cause damage to astronauts and facilities in the Earth's orbit. A single stray bolt in space can travel at over 14,400mph and would hit a satellite with the impact of a hand grenade.
