Indonesia:Government to provide insurance cover to fishermen

| 03 Dec 2025

The Indonesian government in an effort to help small scale fishermen deal with risks they face in their profession has announced an insurance scheme for the community.

The move is part of efforts to strengthen small-scale fishers, who account for 90% of the national fish catch, according to a recent report by Antara News Agency.

The insurance scheme that will cover the risk of accidents at sea for fishermen will come under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries’ red-and-white fishing villages programme, which was launched by the government to strengthen small-scale fishing operations in the country.

The government plans to establish 100 fishing villages in 2025, out of which 65 sites for the first-phase development have been designated and set to be completed by 2 December 2025. A budget proposal for 35 more villages in the second phase has been submitted.
