The National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) has partnered with Taipei Medical University and Google to launch a diabetes risk assessment and intelligent health education programme in the country.
The programme was launched at the "Google Taiwan 20th Anniversary – AI Leading Smart Health" event and will involve the National Health Research Institute and four major diabetes professional associations to develop a locally representative diabetes risk assessment mode.
Taiwan has more than 8.5m people living with chronic diseases, including about 3.2m with diabetes. Long-term complications can significantly affect health and quality of life.
The programme will function through an AI system, where people can view their personal diabetes risk level in the “My Health Bank” platform and receive clear health education reminders, such as suggestions on diet, exercise, and daily blood sugar management. Doctors can also integrate the risk.
Taiwan's NHI system is a social insurance programme run by the government under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The NHIA is responsible for managing health insurance affairs, medical quality, research and development, manpower training and information on the healthcare system. Its operations are funded out of the central government budget.
