General Insurance Association of Japan updates compliance guide amid regulatory changes

The General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ) has revised its "Compliance Guide for Solicitation" amid recent regulatory changes in the country surrounding insurance solicitation and sales practices.

Recently, the Enforcement Regulations of the Insurance Business Act and the “Comprehensive Guidelines for Supervision of Insurance Companies” were amended following a public consultation conducted in December 2025.

The association said the revisions include additional pages explaining the criteria for “Specific Large-Scale Multi-Representative General Insurance Agencies”, a category established under recent amendments to the Insurance Business Act. The updated guide also details the organisational structures required for insurance solicitation and concurrent business operations.

GIAJ added that special feature pages were likewise included to explain planned amendments to regulations governing comparative recommendation sales, which are expected to be introduced in the future.

GIAJ said, “Our Association will continue to work towards further improving the quality of insurance sales by supporting member companies in providing appropriate guidance to agencies, and by helping agencies to establish more appropriate systems through such guidance.”
