Hanwha Life Insurance has approved plans to issue domestic subordinated bonds worth KRW400bn ($302m) to KRW800bn ($604m) to support its financial soundness. The South Korean life insurer's board approved the proposed issuance on 20 October, according to a regulatory filing with the Financial Supervisory Service's Data Analysis, Retrieval and Transfer System (DART).
The insurer said the issuance would help it manage its financial position. However, the final decision to proceed with the bond sale will depend on market conditions, while the timing, final issuance amount and interest rate will be determined and disclosed at a later date.
The planned issuance comes as Hanwha Life manages its capital position amid investment commitments, including the acquisition of Acuon Capital and a capital increase by its subsidiary, Hanwha Investment & Securities. The insurer's capital adequacy ratio under South Korea's Korean Insurance Capital Standard (K-ICS) stood at 167% at the end of the first half of 2026. The subordinated bonds could provide an additional source of capital as the company manages its financial position.
