Sri Lanka:Students impacted by Nat CAT to receive insurance benefits

| 04 Feb 2026

School students in Sri Lanka who were affected by the adverse weather conditions in the country in November and December 2025 will receive special consideration for claims submitted under the Suraksha Sisu insurance programme.

Suraksha Sisu, managed by the government-run Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General, is a free, government-funded insurance scheme in Sri Lanka designed to protect the health and education of over 4m school students. Launched in 2017 and recently enhanced for the 2025–2026 academic year, it ensures that medical emergencies or family tragedies do not force children to drop out of school.

In cases where students have lost their parents or legal guardians due to a disaster, benefit payments will be made without applying the usual income limits, subject to the submission of documents confirming the loss. The insurer has also approved external treatment benefits up to LKR20,000 ($64.65) for medical treatment, purchase of medicines and examination fees directly resulting from accidents caused by the disasters.
