Globally mobile individuals show stronger well-being but face stress and healthcare challenges

Globally mobile individuals demonstrate stronger overall well-being than the general population but face distinct challenges related to stress, belonging and navigating unfamiliar healthcare systems, according to a new study by Cigna Healthcare. The Cigna Healthcare International Health Study: 2026 Globally Mobile Edition, based on responses from more than 11,000 people-including over 1,900 globally mobile individuals across 13 markets-highlights rising stress levels, loneliness and difficulties in accessing care among this workforce segment.

The study found that globally mobile individuals reported a higher average vitality score of 68.9 in 2025, compared with 63.2 for the overall population, with stronger results across physical, mental and spiritual well-being. However, 80% of respondents in this group reported experiencing stress, slightly higher than the general population, driven mainly by financial pressures such as the cost of living and personal finances. Meanwhile, 58% reported feelings of loneliness or social exclusion, often linked to homesickness and the loss of familiar routines.

Relocation is also a key pressure point. Some 73% of respondents said they would have benefited from more pre-move support, while 76% have encountered challenges that affected their ability to thrive abroad. At the same time, access to healthcare continues to be a major concern, with over half saying delays in care and long waiting times have negatively impacted their health or work–life balance. This is further complicated by unfamiliar healthcare systems.

Cigna Healthcare President of International Health Jason Sadler said,  “Living and working abroad has shaped how I approach leadership. I’ve seen first-hand how the right support can determine whether a globally mobile employee merely copes or truly thrives. When organisations invest in meaningful preparation, accessible care and a sense of belonging, they create the conditions for people to thrive—professionally and personally—wherever their work takes them.”
